Appointment of Deputy Chair and up to 16 Board Members to the Council for Nature Conservation and the Countryside (CNCC)

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) is seeking to appoint a Deputy Chair and up to 16 Members, with applications welcome from a wide range of backgrounds, to the Council for Nature Conservation and the Countryside (CNCC). CNCC is a Non-Departmental Public Body and a Statutory Advisory Council to DAERA on nature conservation and the countryside. It was set up under the powers of the Nature and Amenity Lands (Amendment) (NI) Order 1989. Its statutory role is also covered by the provisions of The Environment (NI) Order 2002. The aim of CNCC is to provide independent advice to the Department (DAERA) on nature conservation and the countryside and, in consultation, on Areas of Special Scientific Interest (ASSIs) with due regard to matters affecting agriculture, forestry and inland fisheries. The CNCC is represented on the UK’s Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC).  Further information about this organisation can be found at: https://jncc.gov.uk/.

Time Commitment and Remuneration: The Deputy Chair role requires approximately 30 - 36 days per annum.  This position is remunerated at £6,827 per annum (under review). The Member role requires approximately 18 days per annum. This position is not remunerated.  Reasonable travel and subsistence expenses incurred on official business will be reimbursed.

Terms of Appointment: All successful candidates will be appointed for a three year period from 1st August 2021.  An additional three year term may be offered subject to satisfactory performance and attendance.

Application Process: A merit based process will be applied alongside the Guaranteed Interview Scheme for applicants with a disability. Applicants will be expected to complete an application form demonstrating how they meet the essential criteria for appointment.

The essential criteria are: Knowledge, expertise and practical experience in a field relevant to CNCC; Analytical Ability and Decision Making Skills; and Communication and Teamwork.  Additional essential criteria for the Deputy Chair role are Strategic Leadership; and Corporate Governance.

A sift of applications will be carried out.  A panel interview will follow.
