Summary

The Environmental Noise Directive (2002/49/EC) aims to avoid, prevent and reduce, on a prioritised basis, the harmful effects, including annoyance, resulting from exposure to environmental noise.

Consultation description

The Department of the Environment is proposing a draft Technical Guidance for Noise Mapping and Action Planning which is prepared pursuant to regulation 53 of the Environmental Noise Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2006.

The three main objectives are:

•To determine the noise exposure of the population through noise mapping;
•To make information on environmental noise available to the public; and
•To develop Action Plans based on the mapping results, to reduce noise levels where necessary, and to preserve environmental noise quality where it is good.
