In 2020, the Department of Agriculture, Environment & Rural Affairs (DAERA) sought views on a public discussion document which covered the potential options to help improve resource management in Northern Ireland (NI).

Details

The discussion document Future Recycling and Separate Collection of Waste of a Household Nature in Northern Ireland was launched on 26 June 2020 and closed for responses on 4 October 2020. A series of 12 public events were also delivered by DAERA and the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) to help potential respondents and stakeholders understand the proposals. A total of 56 responses were received and a Summary of Responses and Executive Summary were published on the DAERA website on 4 June 2021.

Following analysis of responses and bearing in mind the new obligations placed on us in the Climate Change Act (Northern Ireland) 2022, DAERA officials have now developed a range of short, medium, and long-term options in response to the discussion document aimed at increasing the quality and quantity of recycling in Northern Ireland while also meeting our obligations under the Act. These options and proposals will be subject to further public consultation before any implementation.
