Marine Licence ML2024002 Lagan pedestrian-cycle bridge ground investigation

Date published: 13 February 2024

The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) Roads have commissioned Amey Consulting to prepare an outline design package to enable procurement of a Design and Build Contractor to construct a new footbridge on the River Lagan.

It is proposed to undertake a ground investigation (GI) as part of the design package. The GI will consist of six boreholes to be completed within the River Lagan (see attached). The purpose of the investigation is to provide detailed geotechnical information of the existing ground conditions to enable efficient detailed design. This will also include sampling for the purposes of geo-technical and geo-environmental testing and assessment of soil and water for potential contamination, and classification of waste.

Project Type: Construction
Location: Lagan towpath/Ormeau Embankment, Belfast
Coordinates: Irish Grid Reference 54.590302, -5.9197131
Project Description: The Ground Investigation works will be completed by a specialist Ground Investigation Contractor in accordance will all relevant standards and restrictions. The Contractor will provide scheme specific Method Statements and Risk Assessments prior to the works commencing. This document provides an outline method statement based on previous similar works undertaken.
Scope of works includes:

  • 6 No. cable percussive with rotary follow-on boreholes drilled in-channel of the river to a depth of 20m below riverbed level, with suitable backfilling/ reinstatement of material in holes afterwards.
  • In situ testing comprising Standard Penetration Tests (SPT), undisturbed piston and U100 sampling to obtain shear strengths of materials encountered.
  • Surveying of the exploratory hole’s locations.
  • Reinstatement of riverbed to be left as previous conditions prior to works.
  • Each exploratory hole location will be checked for buried services prior to breaking ground.
  • Geotechnical laboratory testing to include classification tests, oedometer testing, soil strength tests, chemical determinations of soil / river sediment and groundwater samples.
  • Geo-environmental laboratory testing of soil/ sediment and surface water samples taken during the investigation, to include chemical testing for organic and inorganic analytes and Waste Acceptance Criteria tests.
