Project Description

Royal Portrush Golf Club propose to undertake a coastal protection scheme along a section of coastline to the east of the golf course. This scheme aims to reduce coastal erosion along the Curran Strand dune system and to improve the longevity of the golf course. It is hoped that the scheme will also help to maintain the unique geomorphology and topography of the tall sand hills, and importantly, to retain long term protection to what is the most vulnerable section of the course in particular the 5th green, 6th tees and newly constructed 7th hole.

The works will comprise of an extension to existing coastal defence comprising of a 20 metre rock armour taper and associated sand trap fencing and planting at Curran Strand, Portrush. This project is subject to an Environmental Impact Assessment and an Environmental Statement has been prepared.

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) is the marine licensing authority for the Northern Ireland inshore region as set out at section 113(6) of the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009. DAERA is also the appropriate authority under the Marine Works (Environmental Impact Assessment) Regulations 2007 as amended (the EIA Regulations).  In determining the application, DAERA as appropriate authority will make the EIA consent decision for the project.   DAERA will also make a decision whether to grant regulatory approval (for a marine licence) under Part 4 of the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009.
