Sustainable development

Focus on the Future - Sustainable development aims to bring viability, stability and opportunity to all our social, economic and environmental activities and programmes.

Our responsibilities

As part of the restructuring of the Northern Ireland Civil Service, from 8 May 2016 sustainable development policy matters/issues have transferred from the Executive Office (formerly Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister (OFMDFM)) to the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs.

This page contains the NI Sustainable Development Strategy, the 2011-14 Sustainable Development Implementation Plan and other associated documents published by OFMDFM.

Everyone's Involved - Sustainable Development Strategy

The Executive published the Sustainable Development Strategy 'Everyone's Involved' on 27 May 2010.

The associated Implementation Plan, 'Focus on the Future', is available from the link below.

Sustainable Development Statutory Duty

Under s.25 of the Northern Ireland (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2006, Government Departments and District Councils have a statutory duty to promote the achievement of sustainable development in the exercise of their functions.

OFMDFM published guidance under s.25(2) of the Act in May 2013. The guidance is available to download from the attached link:
