Sustainable development

Sustainable development is an internationally recognised approach that seeks to progress our economic and social ambitions while protecting and enhancing the natural and built environment.

Sustainable development statutory duty

Under section 25 of the Northern Ireland (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2006, Government Departments and District Councils have a statutory duty to promote the achievement of sustainable development in the exercise of their functions.

Responsibility for driving sustainable development in Northern Ireland

Following a restructuring of the NI Civil Service in May 2016 sustainable development became the responsibility of the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs. The principles of sustainable development have been integrated into the work of all Departments and District Councils through the draft Programme for Government and the NICS Outcomes Delivery Plan 2018-19.
