The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) has published two consultation papers setting out policy proposals for the management of Lough Neagh and Lough Erne fisheries.
The aim of the Lough Neagh and Lough Erne Fishery Management Plans (FMPs) is to provide a strategic approach to the sustainable management of these underutilised resources. The FMPs set out how DCAL will seek to manage the fisheries and what will be required to inform this process.
The Plans take into account and compliment existing initiatives such as the EU Eel Management Plans and the North Atlantic Salmon Conversation Organisation (NASCO) salmon management plans and other statutory and regulatory requirements such as the Water Framework Directive.
The plans present an overview of the fisheries and present a series of proposals for the sustainable management of the fisheries and their habitat whilst also maximising their value to the economy and the environment.
