  • Root Cause Analysis Training at CAFRE`s Loughry Campus

    Date published: 16 April 2025

By Rosemary Brennan, Senior Food Technologist, CAFRE

The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise’s (CAFRE) Food Technology team deliver courses in line with food industry needs.

One such course, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), offers a systematic approach to the identification of the underlying cause of a problem. By focusing on the source, businesses can effectively address issues and prevent recurrence.

Generally, RCA is used to investigate incidents, eliminate defects, and enhance systems or processes. CAFRE’s training course provides participants with the knowledge, skills and tools to enable them to confront a problem and ascertain what happened, how and why.

Root Cause Analysis can help food businesses protect the consumer from food safety issues, avoid costs associated with food recalls and withdrawals, protect your business reputation and save money by focusing resources.

Ryan McConnell, Technical Services Manager at Kilkeel Seafoods Ltd who attended the programme in March 2025 shares his experience of the programme: “The Root Cause Analysis course was a great opportunity to explore methods used to get to the source of a problem. The course attracted staff from a range of other companies. Being part of group training aided the learning process, through discussion and the sharing of experiences.”

The RCA programme delivered by CAFRE is designed to provide attendees with root cause analysis techniques and information on how to implement robust practices in the food industry. It can be delivered either in the Loughry Campus or on the factory site.

The next programme being delivered at Loughry Campus is on Friday, 9 May 2025. For more information and to book, visit the CAFRE website.
