Skipper and Owner fined £800 at Londonderry Magistrates Court

Cathal Gillen,135 Ardnamoyle Park, Shantallow, Londonderry, skipper and owner of the fishing vessel Nauru CE5 was convicted today at Londonderry Magistrates court for fishing with no licence, no Vessel Monitoring system, no Electronic logbook on board and retaining undersized King Scallops.

Mr Gillen admitted to: One charge of contravening Article 6 of Council Regulation (EC) No.1224/2009. One charge of contravening Article 9 (2) of Council Regulation (EC)No. 1224/2009. One charge of contravening Article 15 (1) of Council Regulation (EC) No.1224/2009 and one charge of contravening Article 19 of Council Regulation (EC) No.850/98

Mr. Gillen was fined a total of £800.00 plus court costs of £60.00. (£200 per charge)

Notes to editors: 

  1. It is an offence contrary to Article 6 of Council Regulation (EC) No.1224/2009 to fish commercially without a fishing licence.
  2. It is an offence contrary to Article 9 (2) of Council Regulation (EC) No.1224/2009 to fish without a functioning Vessel Monitoring System on board.
  3. It is an offence contrary to Article 15 (1) of Council Regulation (EC) No.1224/2009 to fish without a functioning Electronic Logbook on board.
  4. It is an offence contrary to Article 19 of Council Regulation No.850/98 to retain undersized marine organisms.
