Radioactive Substances

Date published: 30 March 2021

Radioactive Substances users usually need to comply with the limits in their Certificate issued under the Radioactive Substances Act 1993. These numerical limits restrict both the amount of radioactive:

  • material (including sealed sources) that you can keep and use; and
  • waste that you can accumulate and dispose of, on or from your premises.

NIEA recognise that there may be disruption to Radioactive Substances users caused by COVID-19/EU Exit, and have produced temporary Regulatory Position Statements to help Radioactive Substances users during this period. We expect operators to ensure impacts on the environment are minimised, and you must still comply with all of your other environmental regulatory requirements. The temporary COVID-19/EU Exit Regulatory Positions can be accessed below.
