The Shellfish Waters Directive (2006/113/EC) was repealed in December 2013 and subsumed into the Water Framework Directive(WFD) (2000/60/EC). The WFD established a legal framework for the protection, improvement and sustainable use of Europe’s water environment, based on a system of river basin management.
The Department monitors Shellfish Water Protected Areas in accordance with the requirements laid down in the WFD. This latest review meets the Department’s commitment to review Shellfish Water Protected Areas every three years.
