  • The IBA International Bakery Trade Fair in Munich

    Date published: 23 October 2018

Global players in the bakery, confectionery and snack food sector industry meet at the International Bakery Association (IBA) in Munich every three years to exhibit and visit the industry’s leading international trade fair.

In September, several of Northern Ireland’s leading bakers, accompanied by staff from CAFRE and Invest NI attended this international event which showcased international bakery industry innovations. The IBA event attracted over 76,000 international visitors with 1,300 exhibitors showcasing innovations in 12 exhibition halls.

Exhibitors showcased innovations from across the bakery supply chain including raw materials, ingredients, packaging and new production and process technology. The emphasis from exhibitors on automation and process optimisation were evident. With competition in the market place becoming harder and as profit margins shrink many visitors investigated cost reduction technologies and technologies which offered increased processing efficiencies.

The Northern Ireland group visited a Bavarian bakery where the tour was provided by the Bavarian Bakery Association to provide an insight into the expertise of German bakeries. This tour highlighted that bakery problems, such as fluctuating raw ingredients costs and skills shortages, are international problems and not unique to Northern Ireland bakeries.
