Application to register "Lough Neagh Pollan" as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) under the EU protected food name scheme

Under EU legislation, a scheme exists for the protection of food names based on characteristics linked to the geographical area or traditional recipe basis, this is known as Protected Geographical Status.

Consultation process

Under this system, a named food or drink registered at European level is given protection against imitation throughout the European Union. In addition, producers who register their products should benefit from greater consumer awareness in European countries which may help them to take advantage of wider markets.

The Lough Neagh Fishermen’s Co-Operative Society Ltd has completed their application and their specification will be subject to a twelve week UK consultation process across the wider industry to ensure that the specifications are accurate and that the designated area covers all producers.

The 12-week consultation began on 8th February and the Department will co-ordinate any comments.
