Consultation description

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency Pollution Inventory (PIV) is a database of releases of certain substances from major regulated industries and waste water treatment plants. This database helps us meet our obligations under the Regulation (EC) No 166/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 January 2006 concerning the establishment of a European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (E-PRTR).

The information is submitted to NIEA annually by operators of Part A installations regulated by NIEA under the Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations and the reporting of this information is a condition in permits issued to these operators. Operators of major waste water treatment works are also required to report this information.

The NIEA PIV was originally set up with the same reporting requirements as the Environment Agency. The Environment Agency and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency have both recently consulted or are in the process of consulting on revising their pollution inventories to reduce the reporting burden on industry.

It is hoped to revise the NIEA PIV to bring it into line with the newly revised EA and SEPA inventories (although some differences exist in their proposed substances lists).
