Bursaries Awarded to Winning Students

The CAFRE Bursary programme brought Christmas bonuses for twenty-one successful agriculture and horticulture students at CAFRE’s Greenmount Campus. A total of £21,500 was distributed in the Awards presentation during the last week of college prior to Christmas. This year’s bursaries were generously provided by ABP Food Group, AI Services Ltd, Bank of Ireland, Calor, Cogent, Danske Bank, Darren Clarke Golf School, Dunbia, Gibson Trust, HSBC, Irish Farmers’ Journal, John Thompson and Sons Ltd, Moy Park, Tyrone Farming Society, Ulster Farmers’ Union, the Ulster Grassland Society, Genus ABS and
As expected, there was very high competition for the bursaries from Higher Education students at Greenmount Campus who commenced their studies in September 2016 on the BSc Agricultural Technology honours degree, the Foundation Degree in Agriculture and Technology and the Foundation Degree in Horticulture.
Presentation of Awards
Speaking at the Awards Presentation Ceremony, Mr Norman Fulton, Head of DAERA Food and Farming group, thanked the industry representatives for their generosity and willingness to support young people entering higher education within the sector.
In response, the bursary sponsors praised the high quality of the students’ work and congratulated them on their efforts. Ashley Fleming, Cogent’s NI Regional Manager, commented on the amount of work that had gone into the submissions and also the strong performance of the candidates at interview. Peter McCann, journalist with the Irish Farmers’ Journal, noted that he himself had been the recipient of the Irish Farmers’ Journal bursary award in 2010 when he was completing the Honours Degree in Agricultural Technology at CAFRE. Peter commended the quality of the articles produced by the students and noted the outstanding layout and readability of the winning article.
Student Appreciation
Anna Millar, a student on the BSc Agricultural Technology programme and recipient of a bursary from the Ulster Grassland Society, thanked the sponsors for their support. “We are very grateful to these companies and organisations for giving us this fantastic start at CAFRE. It is very encouraging that industry is willing to invest in young people at the start of their career in the land based sector.”
