CAFRE - Where flowers become your future
Date published:
This NI Apprenticeship Week 2026, the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) is delighted to showcase an Apprentice working in the Floristry sector.
Suzie McMullan from Armoy is working with Castle Florist in Ballycastle and attends Greenmount Campus, Antrim to complete her Apprenticeship training.
Having previously completed a Level 2 in Floristry qualification at CAFRE, Suzie felt she would benefit from further training to extend her knowledge and skills. Following the Apprenticeships NI pathway Suzie works in a Floristry shop and is supported through her training by her employer, Michael Magee.
Commenting on the training, Suzie said: “I love that I can work in the shop and earn while still studying one day a week at CAFRE. Apprenticeship training really offers the best of both worlds. Working in the sector while completing the Level 3 Floristry course means I am building my portfolio with different designs, helping me to establish myself as a creative Florist. Working and learning at the same time is boosting my confidence, improves my skills and helps me work faster. My employer enjoys seeing the pieces I create each week whilst at college. I feel a great sense of pride to show off my designs and appreciate their feedback on my creations.”
Employing an Apprentice in a business is not only a commitment, but also an investment in your staff. Commenting on Suzie’s training, Michael said: “Level 3 Floristry Apprenticeship training has offered a fantastic opportunity for our business. It allows staff to work and learn at the same time, which means they can gain a recognised qualification while contributing to the day to day running of the shop. We’ve seen a real boost in Suzie’s motivation. She brings enthusiasm and fresh ideas alongside new techniques, and creative energy into the workplace.
“For us, Apprenticeships offer a cost-effective way to invest in our team’s professional development. It helps us upskill talented staff who want to progress. Training builds a stronger and more knowledgeable workforce and helps supports long term staff retention. It’s a win win. Our staff are our greatest asset, and Apprenticeship training helps us equip them with the skills they need to thrive in this industry. We’re proud to support Suzie as she grows and develops her creativity. Having the Level 3 in Floristry qualification will open new doors to Suzie and our business.”
Floristry is more than arranging flowers. It’s about design, creativity, care and connection with both nature and customers. A Floristry Apprenticeship offers the chance to learn a hands-on trade, develop real skills and grow into a career rooted in flowers. For those ready to learn, create and flourish a course in Floristry at CAFRE is waiting.
