  • Enniskillen Campus launches new Level 2 Certificate in Forgework

    Date published: 28 May 2025

The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) is excited to announce the launch of the Level 2 Certificate in Forgework. The course is being offered at Enniskillen Campus in response to growing demand from the equine and rural industries.

Apply now for the new Level 2 Forgework Certificate being offered at CAFRE Enniskillen Campus this September.

Starting in September 2025, this City & Guilds accredited course offers aspiring farriers, blacksmiths, and craft enthusiasts a valuable opportunity to develop traditional forgework skills in a modern educational environment.

The practical hands-on course is offered in two flexible formats. Apply to study part-time, one day per week at Enniskillen Campus throughout the academic year. Students applying to the Level 2 Technical Certificate in Equine Care have the option to complete the course alongside their full-time programme. This flexibility ensures the programme is accessible to anyone considering a career in forgework.

Delivered by experienced tutors in CAFRE’s fully equipped on-site forge, the qualification covers a broad range of foundational skills including the operation of forge hearths, metalworking techniques, and safe and effective use of blacksmithing tools. Whether learners are aiming to pursue further training in blacksmithing, farriery, or forgework more broadly, this course provides a strong platform for progression.

This course marks the return of forgework training at CAFRE, which was last offered in 2015. The reintroduction of this qualification reflects CAFRE’s ongoing commitment to providing industry-relevant training that meets the evolving needs of the equine and rural sectors.

There are no specific prior qualifications required for the Forgework Certificate. However, applicants who wish to study it alongside the Level 2 Technical Certificate in Equine Care must meet the entry requirements for that programme.

For more information on how to apply, visit the  CAFRE website.
