  • The Gibson Trust supports CAFRE’s Agriculture study tour to Wales

    Date published: 5 September 2025

The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) was delighted to receive a substantial donation from The Gibson Trust to support Level 3 Agriculture study tours within the United Kingdom (UK).

CAFRE Level 3 Agriculture students visit Cogent UK in Chester at the start of their three-day study tour of Wales supported by The Gibson Trust.

The Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Agriculture final year students, were divided into three groups to embark on educational study tours to three locations.

Twenty-two students set off on a three-day study tour across Wales and parts of England. Supported by the Gibson Trust, the tour was designed to expose students to a wide range of agricultural enterprises, from cutting-edge genetics to regenerative and diversified farming systems.

The tour provided a unique opportunity for students to connect classroom theory with real-world practice, engage with the industry, and reflect on the future of sustainable agriculture.

The tour began at Cogent UK in Chester, a leader in bovine genetics. Students explored the science behind artificial insemination, genomic selection, and sexed semen technology. A tour of the laboratories and semen collection facilities highlighted the rigorous biosecurity and quality control measures involved in modern breeding. The students developed their understanding of how genetics can enhance herd health and productivity, alongside the ethical considerations surrounding genetic selection in livestock.

The second day featured two contrasting but equally innovative enterprises. At Grosvenor Farms, one of the UK’s most advanced dairy operations, students learnt how regenerative agriculture principles, such as soil health, nutrient cycling, and biodiversity can be applied at scale. The farm’s use of renewable energy, including solar panels and anaerobic digestion, demonstrated their strong commitment to sustainability.

Later, at Dinmore Estate in Hereford, students explored a mixed enterprise combining beef, sheep, and arable farming. They observed rotational grazing systems, breeding strategies, and the integration of livestock and crop production. The estate also features an equine centre and arena, offering a broader view of diversification in modern farming.

The final day took students to Fferam Gyd in Anglesey, a family-run farm focused on grass-based livestock production. With 120 suckler cows and 550 ewes, the farm emphasises pasture management and finishing livestock on grass. Students also saw the farm’s diversification efforts, including wind turbines and a self-catering cottage, which contribute to financial sustainability and rural tourism.

Throughout the overall tour, students gained practical insights into genetics, regenerative practices, renewable energy, and farm diversification models. Each visit reinforced the importance of innovation, sustainability, and adaptability in agriculture today.

The tour was not only educational but also inspiring, helping students see their potential future roles in the agri-food sector. CAFRE extends sincere thanks to Cogent UK, Grosvenor Farms, Dinmore Estate, and Fferam Gyd for their hospitality and willingness to share their expertise.

CAFRE is deeply indebted to The Gibson Trust for contributing to the costs of the study tour for the final year Level 3 Agriculture students at Greenmount Campus. The tour also provided the opportunity for students to connect with each other one final time as a group, before embarking on their own career paths. Some of the students will continue their studies on higher level courses, some will enter employment, while others will return to their home enterprises to work alongside family members.

If you, or someone you know is considering leaving school after Year 12, CAFRE offers full-time and part-time courses in Agriculture. For more information, visit the CAFRE website.
