How equine study trips transform learning at CAFRE Enniskillen Campus

Choosing to study Equine at the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) opens the door to a hands-on career within a diverse and exciting industry, with opportunities across the UK, Ireland, and beyond.
At Enniskillen Campus, our Level 3 Equine Management and Level 2 Equine Care courses place strong emphasis on industry study trips, designed to expand student knowledge, build confidence, and provide insight into the standards expected across the various equine disciplines.
A recent visit to Philip McBurney Racing showed students the high level of care required in the racing sector. Philip’s yard showcases modern, horse-centred stable design—offering an enriching, calm environment that prioritises both physical and psychological wellbeing. Students were particularly interested in the innovative cooling techniques used after exercise, an excellent example of best practice in injury prevention and equine management.
A visit to Glenpatrick Sport Horses provided a different perspective, focusing on the training and production of high-quality sport horses. Observing horses being schooled over show jumps helped students understand how athleticism, confidence, and technique are developed progressively. The Glenpatrick team demonstrated how small, thoughtful adjustments in training can dramatically improve a horse’s way of going. Students also toured the professional facilities gaining an appreciation for how good yard design supports safe handling, effective training, and optimal welfare. Student Alena Campell described this visit as an: “Invaluable experience for broadening practical knowledge and deepening understanding of professional equine industry standards.”
The third trip recently embarked on was to Cavan Equestrian Performance Sales where students explored the world of buying and selling horses. They learned about the complete sales preparation process—from turnout and presentation to evaluating conformation, movement, and suitability. Observing the sales ring in action provided insight into what buyers look for and how horses are assessed in a competitive marketplace.
Collectively, these study trips not only develop technical skill but also broaden students’ understanding of the wide range of opportunities available within the equine industry. Learners return with increased motivation, and a deeper appreciation of professional standards, whilst being encouraged to refine their career goals across areas such as racing, coaching, training, sales preparation, stud work and equine business.
If you’re passionate about horses and ready to explore a variety of exciting equine careers, the Equine courses at Enniskillen Campus are the perfect place to begin. Join us at our Open Day on Saturday 7 March to take your first steps into the equine industry. Book your place and find out more on the CAFRE website.
