  • CAFRE BSc (Hons) Equine Management students complete industry-focused stud tour

    Date published: 7 May 2026

Second-year BSc (Hons) Equine Management students from the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) Enniskillen Campus successfully completed a two day educational study tour across several of Ireland’s leading Thoroughbred stud farms.

CAFRE Second year BSc (Hons) Equine Management students visited Grange Stud and meet the stallion Walk in the Park as part of their stud tour.

The tour formed an integral component of the students’ Applied Enterprise Management module. As part of their coursework, students were required to evaluate and select appropriate stallion options for the CAFRE Thoroughbred broodmares.

Over the course of the tour students were hosted by an impressive line-up of renowned studs including: Tally Ho, Derrinstown, Kildangan, Rathbarry, Glenview, The Beeches, Grange, Castlehyde and Coolmore Headquarters.

These visits enabled students to examine a wide range of leading Flat and National Hunt stallions, assess stallion conformation and evaluate pedigree compatibility, all while gaining a first-hand insight into the commercial trends shaping the Thoroughbred breeding industry.

A highlight of the tour included visiting Ballydoyle Racing where students were welcomed by CAFRE graduate Chris Armstrong. Chris provided an exclusive behind‑the‑scenes tour of one of the world’s most prestigious racing establishments. His insights into training, breeding decisions, and industry expectations offered students invaluable professional insight as they consider future career pathways within the equine industry.

    Student reflections

Ashlee McEntee, reflected on the value of the experience: “It was a great opportunity to speak with, and gain from the insight and expertise of people who are at the top in the industry. I learnt about all the things to look for when assessing stallions. You’re looking at how well they cross with the mare, how they complement the mare. As CAFRE students we are very fortunate to have these opportunities and to get an awareness into what we can do in the future within the industry.”

Michaela Doran commented: “From the trip I learnt that it is important to ensure you are looking for what suits your mare specifically, this helps narrow down the best match. The stud trip was really good, it was great to visit all the different studs, with a great selection of Flat and National Hunt stallions. Meeting industry experts showed us the opportunities available. The most enjoyable part for me was discussing stallion choices for the CAFRE mares and experiencing it all as a group.”

The study tour provided students with direct access to top-class bloodstock, current breeding practices and leading industry professionals. These experiences help equip CAFRE graduates with the knowledge, professional confidence, and industry connections required of emerging equine specialists.

Students gained meaningful insights and connections that will support their progression into careers in equine breeding, racing, and stud management.

Explore the wide range of educational opportunities available at CAFRE by visiting us at Balmoral Show, staff will be ready to chat to you in the Eikon Centre (EK1) throughout the show.
