Industry insight for CAFRE students at Kilwaughter Lime
Date published:
Level 3 Land-Based Engineering students from the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE), Greenmount Campus recently visited Kilwaughter Lime, a mineral & quarry processing company located near Larne, Co Antrim.
Students gained valuable insights into the company’s operations and the crucial role of engineering in a quarrying and processing environment.
The visit provided an excellent opportunity for students to connect classroom-based learning with real-world industrial practice. On arrival, Kilwaughter Lime staff delivered an engaging presentation outlining the company’s history, its product range, and the significance of lime products across industries, particularly in agriculture, construction, and environmental management.
Students were then taken on a guided tour of the quarry and processing facilities. This allowed them to observe key stages of production, including extraction techniques, crushing and screening processes, and the operation of large-scale plant and machinery. Throughout the tour, strong emphasis was placed on health and safety procedures, helping students appreciate their critical importance in an active quarrying environment.
The visit proved highly beneficial, enhancing students’ understanding of how land-based engineering skills are applied within industry. It also highlighted potential career pathways within the quarrying and materials processing sector.
CAFRE would like to extend its thanks to the staff at Kilwaughter Lime for hosting an informative and engaging visit, and for sharing their expertise with the students.
