  • COVID-19 advice to Private Veterinary Practitioners (PVPs) and veterinary diagnostic laboratories regarding SARS-CoV-2 in animals – case definition, testing and international reporting obligations

There is no evidence of COVID-19 circulating in pets and other animals in the UK, and there is nothing to suggest animals may transmit the disease to humans. However, there is emerging evidence that some animals can become infected with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (the causative agent of COVID-19) following close contact with infected humans (a reverse zoonosis).

The briefing notes below are applicable to All PVPs and veterinary diagnostic laboratories considering SARS-CoV-2 testing. The purpose being to advise on the professional obligations associated with reporting and the process to report positive test results to the relevant competent authority and Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) in support of the UK’s international reporting obligations to the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE).

    Briefing notes:

    • APHA Briefing Note 09/21, SARS-CoV-2 in Animals – Case Definition, Testing and International reporting Obligations
    • APHA Briefing Note 10/20 – Advice for Veterinarians and their Clients on Pets and COVID-19
