Contacting the Northern Ireland Environment Agency
The Northern Ireland Environment Agency’s role is to protect and enhance Northern Ireland’s environment, and in doing so, deliver health and well-being benefits and support economic growth.
The Agency has responsibility for water and waste regulation in Northern Ireland, as well as looking after the natural environment (including country parks and nature reserves). The Agency’s Environmental Crime Unit (ECU) addresses serious, organised and persistent waste crime through investigation, enforcement and partnership working.
To find a contact, visit Contacts | Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs.
To report a water pollution incident
All emergency water pollution incidents should be reported to the NIEA Incident Hotline 0800 80 70 60 – available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Less urgent incidents can be reported by emailing emergency-pollution@daera-ni.gov.uk (only monitored during office hours).
To report an environmental incident
To report an environmental, marine or fisheries incident, use the DAERA Environmental Incident Reporting System. Visit the webpage for more information on incidents which should and should not be reported using this online system.
Waste crime less than 20m3 (the equivalent of a fully loaded bin-lorry) should be reported to your local council – details can be found at Local councils in Northern Ireland | nidirect.
