Agriculture Apprenticeships at Enniskillen Campus

The agriculture sector is evolving rapidly. Apprenticeship training has emerged as a popular option for students seeking hands-on experience in the field.
The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE), offers Level 2 and Level 3 part-time qualifications at its Enniskillen Campus.
The demand for skilled agricultural staff continues to rise. Apprenticeship programmes provide a unique opportunity for students to blend classroom learning with real world paid work experience in the sector.
Commenting on the part-time courses delivered at CAFRE, Enniskillen Campus, Sharon McLaren (Acting Head of Agriculture Education) said: “We want to ensure learners are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities of modern farming. Apprenticeship training offers an excellent opportunity to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. We invite school leavers, or those considering work within the sector to attend our Information Evening on Tuesday 15 April at 7pm at Enniskillen Campus.”
Students new to the industry commence their learning on the City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Work-based Agriculture course, which typically takes two years of study, one day per week to complete. While traditional agricultural education provides students with a strong theoretical foundation, Apprenticeships allow them to apply this knowledge in real-life scenarios. On completion of a Level 2 course, learners may progress on to the Level 3 Diploma in Work-based Agriculture course.
“By working alongside experienced farmers, students gain firsthand exposure to the industry's best practices, innovative techniques, and sustainable farming methods,” added Mrs McLaren.
In a competitive sector, employers seek candidates with hands-on experience. Modern agriculture is increasingly focused on sustainability, resource efficiency, and technological advancements. Learners on Apprenticeship programmes are encouraged to react to changing requirements and adapt to demands within the sector.
Remarking on the part-time Agriculture course provision at CAFRE Enniskillen Campus, Philip Holdsworth, Senior Lecturer commented: “Agriculture courses have been delivered at Enniskillen Campus for over 50 years. We do not want home commitments to hinder learning opportunities for students living in Fermanagh and Tyrone. Part-time, one day per week Apprenticeship training in Agriculture offers anyone over the age of 16 educational options. You don’t need to travel to CAFRE Greenmount Campus to attain a formally recognised agriculture qualification.
“Apprenticeship training plays a crucial role in strengthening rural economies. As learners gain expertise in farming, they are more likely to contribute and support rural development locally. This, in turn, creates job opportunities, boosts local economies, and ensures the continued growth of the agricultural sector in the local area,” continued Mr Holdsworth.
