  • Apply now for PIABC Level 3 Diploma in Packaging at CAFRE

    Date published: 23 July 2026

Professionals across Northern Ireland’s agri-food industry are being encouraged to take advantage of a valuable opportunity to enhance their knowledge and expertise in packaging, as the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) officially opens enrolments for its PIABC Level 3 Diploma in Packaging beginning in September 2026.

    Graduating packaging class of 2025.

Delivered at CAFRE’s Loughry Campus, this qualification is designed to support individuals and businesses in navigating the rapidly evolving packaging landscape. With increasing regulatory pressures and growing consumer demand for environmentally responsible solutions, the course offers timely and practical insights to help companies adapt and thrive.

Supporting the transition to sustainable packaging

Packaging has become a critical focus for the agri-food sector, particularly as new legislation and environmental targets continue to shape how products are designed, presented and distributed. The PIABC Level 3 Certificate provides learners with a comprehensive understanding of packaging materials, technologies and systems, with an emphasis on sustainability and circular economy principles.

Participants will develop the knowledge required to make informed decisions around packaging selection, helping businesses reduce waste, improve recyclability, and align with emerging environmental standards. This is particularly important as organisations prepare for upcoming regulatory changes and commitments linked to climate action and resource efficiency.

    Practical skills for industry application

The course is structured to ensure that learning is practical, relevant and immediately applicable within the workplace. Covering key areas such as packaging materials, design, production processes and supply chain considerations. It equips learners with the tools needed to optimise packaging performance while balancing cost, functionality and environmental impact.

By investing in staff development through this course, companies can strengthen their internal capabilities, drive innovation, and future-proof their operations in a competitive marketplace.

    An excellent CPD opportunity

In addition to its technical benefits, the PIABC Level 3 Diploma represents an outstanding Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunity for individuals working across the agri-food sector. Whether involved in product development, quality assurance, procurement or sustainability roles, the qualification enables professionals to broaden their expertise and remain at the forefront of industry developments.

“The PIABC Level 3 Diploma in Packaging is an excellent CPD opportunity for anyone working within the agri-food sector. It provides a strong foundation in packaging principles. Participants gain practical industry-relevant knowledge, helping businesses make more informed packaging decisions. It’s a valuable investment in both personal development and organisational capability,” comments Anne Bencze, Packaging Technologist at CAFRE.

With enrolments now open, businesses are encouraged to secure places early and support their teams in gaining the knowledge and skills needed to transition towards more sustainable packaging solutions.
