CAFRE graduate recognised among UK's top equine student researchers
Date published:
A recent graduate of the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE), Enniskillen Campus, Coraigh Lynch, has been named a finalist in the highly regarded British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA), Equine Thesis of the Year Award, 2026, recognising excellence in undergraduate equine research.
Originally from Greysteel, Co. Londonderry, Coraigh began his journey at CAFRE, studying the Level 3 Diploma in Equine Management before progressing to the BSc (Hons) degree Equine Management programme, graduating this year with First Class Honours. During his time at CAFRE, he combined a strong academic interest in equine health and welfare with extensive practical experience gained through over a decade of working with horses.
His dissertation, entitled "An Investigation into the Variation of Equine Parasite Eggs Within a Faeces Sample", explored an important aspect of equine health management. The research examined variation in parasite egg counts within faecal samples, contributing to a greater understanding of evidence-based parasite control practices and supporting informed decision-making in equine health management.
The quality of this research was recognised within CAFRE, with Coraigh being jointly awarded the Irish Draught Horse Society (Northern Ireland) Cup for Best Dissertation in 2026.
Reflecting on his studies, Coraigh said: "My time at CAFRE provided me with an excellent balance of academic study and practical industry experience. The degree helped me develop valuable research and analytical skills, while also allowing me to investigate a subject that has real relevance to horse health and welfare. Being shortlisted for the BETA Equine Thesis of the Year Award is a real honour, and I am grateful for the support and encouragement I received from CAFRE staff throughout my studies."
Alongside his academic success, Coraigh has gained significant practical experience in the equine industry, working with broodmares, foals and yearlings and developing specialist knowledge in thoroughbred breeding and youngstock development. Following graduation, he secured a year-long internship at Watership Down Stud, one of the UK's leading Thoroughbred breeding establishments where he is involved in yearling preparation, veterinary assistance and stud management.
Throughout his studies, he received several awards recognising both his academic performance and industry commitment, including the Equestrian and Farm Feeds Cup, which acknowledges his progress during the 2024 academic year, the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders Association Cup in 2025 for commitment to the CAFRE Equine Breeding Unit and an Industry Support Bursary which enabled him to undertake a study tour of Kentucky's renowned thoroughbred industry in 2025.
Coraigh's success at CAFRE reflects the high calibre of students within the college and their commitment to advancing modern equine practices. His achievements demonstrate the benefits of combining research-led education with practical industry experience to prepare graduates for rewarding careers across the equine industry.
His commitment to both academic study and practical learning has been exemplary, and it has been a pleasure to support him throughout his academic journey, and staff look forward to following his continued success within the equine industry.
Once again, the CAFRE Equine team would like to congratulate Coraigh on this outstanding achievement and wish him every success in the live final of the BETA Equine Thesis of the Year Awards, taking place on Wednesday 21 October.
