  • Calling all growers

    Date published: 20 October 2025

Do you work with peat-based growing media, peat-free growing media and/or make recommendations on growing media to customers? Are you interested in learning about current developments in peat free growing within horticulture?

Join CAFRE staff members Mark Huey (Horticulture Technologist) and Aleana Cairns (Horticulture Advisor) at a Growers’ Gathering for Production Horticulture, on Wednesday 29 October 2025.

Join us at the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE), Greenmount Campus on Wednesday 29 October for a Growers’ Gathering. The event will provide a rounded view of where the Northern Ireland production horticulture industry currently is and needs to get to regarding peat.

Hear from industry and research professionals about the developments of peat products in the sector. Speakers include Dr. Paul Alexander (Bulrush Horticulture), Dr Raghavendra Prasad (Royal Horticultural Society), Dr Eoghan Corbett (Teagasc), Mark Preston (DAERA, Peatland Policy) and Dr Konstantinos Xyntaris (CAFRE).

There will also be opportunity for discussion with Q&A sessions and a chance to see the demonstration projects carried out here at CAFRE. In the afternoon David Talbot, Horticulture Consultant from ADAS will host an information session on pest and disease in ornamental production.

Book your place by visiting the events section of the CAFRE website.
