The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) Enniskillen Campus is set to welcome early-career farriers from across Northern Ireland and beyond to a unique professional development event on Friday 26 June 2026.
‘The Thinking Farrier – Early Career Development Day’ delivered in collaboration with the Northern Ireland Farriery Association (NIFA) will feature internationally renowned farrier, blacksmith and educator Cody Gregory, who will lead a series of practical demonstrations, workshops and discussions designed to support farriers in the early stages of their careers.
The one-day event has been specifically developed to help farriers transition from training into confident, real-world practice. Participants will benefit from hands-on demonstrations with horses, guided case work and interactive sessions aimed at improving decision-making and technical skills in everyday farriery.
Attendees will gain practical experience in areas such as hoof mapping, trimming, shoe selection and fitting, while also exploring common challenges faced within the first years of professional practice.
Importantly, the event is free to attend for early-career farriers and trainees, reflecting CAFRE’s ongoing commitment to supporting skills development within the equine and farriery sectors.
Speaking ahead of the event, Laura Smith, Programme Manager for Farriery at CAFRE, Enniskillen Campus, said: “This event is designed to give early-career farriers the confidence to apply their skills in real-world situations. By learning from an internationally respected farrier like Cody Gregory, participants will gain practical insights and decision-making skills that they can immediately apply in their day-to-day work.”
Developing skills for the future
The event complements CAFRE’s broader commitment to professional development through initiatives such as the Farriery Upskilling Programme, delivered at Enniskillen Campus.
This part-time programme delivered over two years, combines practical forge training with theoretical learning in areas such as equine anatomy, movement, behaviour, welfare and business management.
Participants on the programme have the opportunity to work towards the International Diploma of the Worshipful Company of Farriers, a recognised professional qualification that supports career progression within the industry.
CAFRE, Enniskillen Campus continues to play a key role in developing the next generation of skilled farriers by providing high-quality training, expert instruction and industry relevant learning opportunities.
Events such as “The Thinking Farrier” ensure that both new entrants and practising farriers have access to development opportunities helping them refine their skills, build confidence and meet the evolving demands of the profession.
