Find your purpose and passion for Horticulture at CAFRE

Ben Neill, a former Royal School Armagh pupil has turned a personal passion for gardening into a promising career path at the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE).
Ben has recently commenced studying on the Foundation Degree in Horticulture, a programme validated by Ulster University, delivered at Greenmount Campus, Antrim.
Ben first enrolled on the two-year Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Horticulture after his Year 12 studies. “I first heard about the Horticulture courses through staff at my school,” explained Ben. “For me, gardening was always a hobby, but CAFRE showed me how Horticulture could become my career.”
After successful completion of the Level 3 course Ben chose to continue his education, drawn by the opportunities and industry connections available through CAFRE.
His experience on the course so far has been nothing short of transformative. “It’s been brilliant,” added Ben. “We get to develop our knowledge and skills and meet people working in the industry when out on visits. Studying at Greenmount Campus gives access to opportunities you simply wouldn’t find elsewhere. It will make a huge difference to our CVs.”
One module that stands out for Ben is Plant Identification, which has sparked his deeper appreciation for biodiversity and conservation. “My opinions have drastically changed towards wildlife gardening and the preservation of older plants,” shared Ben.
Looking ahead, Ben hopes to pursue a career in garden design and maintenance. His advice to others considering choosing a course in Horticulture is clear: “Horticulture offers such a broad variety of work areas. Whether you enjoy getting your hands dirty or prefer a more technical role, there’s a position that will suit you. I’ve been surprised by how many opportunities there are, you never know where Horticulture could take you.”
CAFRE continues to nurture the next generation of Horticulturists, offering hands-on experience, specialist teaching, and a gateway into a thriving industry.
