  • The Introduction to Gamekeeping course is back

    Date published: 3 April 2026

The Introduction to Gamekeeping course is open for applications. The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE), along with the Irish Grouse Conservation Trust (IGCT) and the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) are finalising arrangements for the Introduction to Gamekeeping course, due to commence in September 2026.

Gamekeeping students and Glenwherry’s Head Gamekeeper, Merlin Becker (IGCT) discussing habitat management and how to provide a water source for birds and mammals during dry weather at CAFRE’s Glenwherry Hill Farm.

Niamh Woods, CAFRE Biodiversity Technologist and course manager, welcomed the reopening of the course and comments: “This course is suited to anyone with a genuine interest in country sports and gamekeeping. Places are limited so early application is recommended.”

Niamh added: “The course will cover both theory and practical elements of a wide range of game-related topics, including methods, and best practice of predator control, habitat management, general licensing and introduction to deer stalking. Successful completion of the course includes BASC student membership, BASC Shotgun and Rifle - Safe Shot assessment and certification and a Lantra accredited grey squirrel control qualification.”

This six-day course, held predominantly on Fridays over four months, starting in September 2026, will be mainly based at CAFRE’s Hill Farm Centre, Glenwherry. Applicants must be at least 18 years old to be eligible to attend.

Niamh concluded: “Applications can be made via the CAFRE website, where a draft timetable can also be found.”

For more details, please refer to the CAFRE website or contact Niamh Woods on 028 9052 4811 or by email: niamh.woods@daera-ni.gov.uk.
