  • Land-based Engineering students expand learnings at McCauley Trailers

    Date published: 27 May 2026

Level 3 Land-based Engineering students from the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) recently took part in an educational visit to McCauley Trailers, Toomebridge. Students gained valuable insight into modern manufacturing and large-scale engineering processes.

Land-based Engineering students from CAFRE visited McCauley Trailers to expand their learnings in machinery manufacturing.

The visit offered students an overview of the full production lifecycle of a trailer, beginning at the initial customer enquiry stage. Students learned how customer requirements are interpreted and developed into detailed technical drawings by design engineers, ensuring that each trailer is tailored to meet specific operational needs.

The tour continued onto the factory floor where students followed a trailer as it moved along the production line, with multiple sub-assemblies added at each stage. Students observed the sourcing and production of steel into individual components according to the next stage of manufacture.

Students also watched a robotic welder in operation, providing a clear demonstration of how automated and advanced welding technologies enhance strength, durability, consistency and overall quality in heavy engineering.

In the finishing bays, students saw the installation of Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and electrical systems including lighting and power units. Wheels and tyres were fitted to meet customer specifications, and students were introduced to air brake and hydraulic brake systems. This provided an opportunity to understand the vital role these systems play in safety and performance.

The visit concluded with an engaging talk from company director Caitriona Gribben, who outlined the development and growth of McCauley Trailers and how the business has evolved over time. Students were informed about the wide range of employment and career opportunities available within McCauley Trailers.

Students found the visit to be both informative and inspiring. The importance of planning, efficiency, and workflow management in a high-output manufacturing environment were emphasised. A valuable real-world understanding of engineering processes was gained alongside appreciation of the diverse skill set required within modern machinery manufacturing.

If you are considering your options after GSCEs, a Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Land-based Engineering could be the course for you. Visit Open Farm Weekend at Greenmount Campus, Antrim on Saturday 13 or Sunday 14 June between 11 am - 4 pm where you will have the opportunity to see our facilities, meet our staff and hear more about our courses.
