  • McIlveen visits Movanagher Fish Farm

    Date published: 23 June 2016

Agriculture Minister Michelle McIlveen visited Movanagher Fish Farm yesterday.

The farm, which supplies tens of thousands of fish to waterways in Northern Ireland, is located on an island between Movanagher Canal and the Lower River Bann, near Kilrea.

It raises brown and rainbow trout from the egg stage through to ‘takable’ size of 25cm and larger.

The Minister said: “Angling is one of the biggest leisure activities here in Northern Ireland. People of all ages, backgrounds and abilities can take part, and our waters attract tourists from Europe and further afield. We are renowned across the world for our lakes and rivers.

“The work that takes place here in Movanagher is key to supplying fish for those waterways. Fish that begin life in the hatchery end up across Northern Ireland, where they augment and enhance our offering to anglers.

“These fish could be delivered to Brantry Lough, Craigavon Lakes, Lough Money, Lough Cowey or Altnahinch Reservoir. Ideally, they will be tightening the lines of anglers on river banks, lakesides and angling platforms in a range of locations.”

The farm covers an area of about four hectares, comprising long concrete raceways, concrete and fibreglass tanks and a hatchery facility.

The Minister added: “It was interesting to see how the fish are raised from hatching through the various stages, and across the tanks at Movanagher, before they are big enough to release. I was pleased to hear from the staff at this fish farm, who combine knowledge with a passion and enthusiasm for what they do.

“Today I saw one aspect of the work of DAERA Inland Fisheries. Supplying fish is part of a much wider effort which includes licensing, environmental monitoring and fisheries enforcement.

“All of this takes place in collaboration with stakeholders and the wider angling community. Also, this fish farm is open to the public, and anyone can arrange a visit – I would encourage those with an interest to come to Movanagher and see it for themselves.”
