  • Muir sets out partnership vision for thriving, sustainable food production

    Date published: 13 May 2026

DAERA Minister Andrew Muir has set out his vision to work in partnership with farmers, processors and consumers to build a thriving, resilient and environmentally sustainable food system for Northern Ireland.

DAERA Minister Andrew Muir pictured with BBC Food & Farming Awards Head Judge Paula McIntyre and BBC Countryfile presenter Adam Henson at the Food NI annual Balmoral Show breakfast.

At Food NI’s annual Balmoral Show breakfast this morning, Minister Muir told guests Northern Ireland was “a proud, world-class food producing region, with a strong international reputation for delivering quality food, produced to the highest standards.”

However, the Minister also stressed the importance of protecting and strengthening that reputation “not just for the sake of economy, but for our food security, our health and our environment.”

Minister Muir observed: “Whilst our Food and Drink processing sector is Northern Ireland’s largest manufacturing sector food matters for more than economic output alone, food is central to our health and wellbeing and to the vitality of rural and coastal communities.

“A year ago I launched the Northern Ireland Food Strategy Framework Action Plan and I remain committed to focusing our collective efforts to maximise the opportunities our food system offers and to support healthy people, a resilient environment and a strong inclusive economy. The way forward is clear: collaboration, innovation and shared ambition.”

Minister Muir took the opportunity to welcome the BBC Food & Farming Awards coming to Northern Ireland for the first time later this year and encouraged as many people as possible to celebrate the achievements of the region’s food and drink sector by nominating local businesses.

He added: “I pay tribute to all our food heroes, growing, producing and making our food who will be showcased later this year when we host the BBC Food and Farming Awards in October.  I would encourage everyone to engage with the nominations process, as we begin building momentum towards Northern Ireland hosting this highly acclaimed event in 2026.”
