  • National competition success for Shea

    Date published: 5 December 2017

Nineteen year old Shea McFerran from Larne has recently secured his place in the Worldskills UK Landscape Gardening Squad after three days of intensive competition at the Skills Show in Birmingham’s NEC.

Shea, who is a final year horticulture student at CAFRE’s Greenmount Campus, describes how he got into horticulture. He said: “I first became interested in a career in horticulture when I did some work experience with Inver Nursery while I was still at school. The owner, Mr John Shannon, encouraged me to apply to study at Greenmount and I’ve never looked back.

“I’ve developed a great range of skills and have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of the landscape gardening competitions but to compete at UK level was beyond all my expectations. The National competition was tough but now I’m working hard to finish my course and keep up with the Squad training programme for UK Team selection. I’ve now got a real possibility of competing in the Worldskills Final in Russia in 2019.”
