Non-executive board member appointed to DAERA

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has appointed Sharon McCue as a non-executive board member (NEBM) to the Departmental Board and as Chairperson to the Department’s Audit and Risk Assurance Committee.

The role of the NEBM is to offer constructive challenge to the Board's business ensuring strategy and policy are effectively scrutinised, whilst contributing to the good governance of DAERA.

Mrs McCue’s appointment is for three years and commenced on 1 January 2018.

Notes to editors: 

  1. Sharon McCue was appointed as a non-executive board member (NEBM) to the DAERA Departmental Board and as Chairperson to the Department’s Audit and Risk Assurance Committee from 1 January 2018.
  2. Mrs McCue has over 15 years’ experience as an Executive Director of Finance and ICT in the Health Service. In her role as a Trust Board member in the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service she provides specialist advice to the Trust Board, Chief Executive (especially in his role as NIAS’s Accounting Officer) and other Director colleagues on all financial matters. She is the lead executive on the Trust’s audit committee. During her career she has held a number of senior positions in a range of organisations in both the private and public sector including local Government, business development, global manufacturing of leisurewear and aeronautical engineering.
  3. Mrs McCue is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), a Past President of the Institute in Northern Ireland and current Chair of CIMA in Ireland.
  4. Following her election in 2009 to CIMA’s central global governing body, she has contributed to the profession with specific responsibilities within CIMA’s governance - most recently as Chair of CIMA Europe. She was awarded the Institute’s silver medal in June 2017 in recognition of her contribution to CIMA as a non-executive board member.
  5. Mrs McCue has a Masters Degree in Marketing and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing. She spent over 10 years as an Associate Lecturer in the Open University Business School delivering the Business Strategy course for the MBA Programme across Europe. She has contributed to core Open University material in the area of public policy.
  6. NEBM’s are paid an attendance fee of £500 per day. The time commitment will be approximately 20 days per annum.
  7. The NEBM is bound not to engage in political activity which would in the opinion of the Department compromise their membership of the Board of the Department.
  8. All appointments are made on merit. Political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity to be made public. Mrs McCue has not had any political activity in the last five years.
