Mr Poots said: “I welcome the decision by Trade Secretary Liz Truss to establish an independent Trade and Agriculture Commission. It is imperative that any plans for food imports into the UK post-Brexit should meet the same high animal welfare, food, environmental standards that our farmers are renowned for.

“However, the Government still needs to set out a clear and full policy that safeguards the UK from the damaging impact of importing food that does not meet the high standards and quality of produce here.

“The establishment of the Commission will be a positive step in providing assurance to producers and public alike that any future trade deal will uphold the UK’s high values in animal welfare, environmental protection and food quality and safety.”
