    Date published: 5 June 2026

    The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has published the 2026 management measures for the Lough Neagh eel fishery.

    For the 2026 season, DAERA has determined that:

    • The total allowable catch will be 25 tonnes, exclusively for the silver eel fishery;
    • The maximum landing size for eels will be 90 centimetres; and
    • The yellow eel fishery will be closed for a period of three years, commencing in 2026.

    These measures reflect DAERA’s statutory responsibilities to ensure the sustainable management of eel stocks and to support the long-term recovery of the European eel, which remains critically endangered across its natural range.

    Support for Permit Holders

    DAERA recognises that the closure of the yellow eel fishery will have implications for yellow eel permit holders. The Department is therefore progressing, as a priority, proposals for a temporary cessation scheme to support those affected.

    Next Steps

    DAERA will continue to engage closely with LNFCS and other stakeholders as these measures are implemented. Compliance will be monitored, and the position will be kept under review in light of emerging scientific evidence.

    In addition, a review of the Neagh Bann Eel Management Plan will be undertaken in line with the timetable for the fourth cycle River Basin Management Plan, with a revised plan to come into effect in 2028.

    DAERA remains committed to effective regulation, enforcement, and partnership working to support both the recovery of eel stocks and the long-term sustainability of the fishery.
