School pupils ‘Feed Their Minds’ at Loughry Campus

Over 890 GCSE Science and Food & Nutrition pupils from 39 schools across Northern Ireland had the opportunity to open their minds to a career in the food and drink industry, through an innovative syllabus support event hosted by Loughry Campus, College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise, Cookstown.
The three-day ‘Feed Your Mind’ event utilises the extensive practical facilities unique to Loughry to provide the students with a fun-filled and informative look at the use of science and technology within the food and drink industry. The pupils were taken through several practical demonstrations, including the very popular chocolate production, cheese processing as well as tickling their taste buds in new product development and finding out how sausages are made. The programme is aimed at illustrating how various scientific techniques are applied to the development, manufacture and packaging of our foods as well as highlighting how consumer issues have a major impact on the food we eat.
The event was also an excellent opportunity for the pupils to hear about the vast array of careers on offer in the industry and how courses at Loughry could provide them with further study in an exciting and rewarding area.
