Tyrone students shaping their future through food at CAFRE Loughry Campus
Date published:
Two students from County Tyrone are proving that a passion for food can open the door to exciting career opportunities, as they study Level 3 Extended Diploma Food courses at CAFRE’s Loughry Campus in Cookstown.
For Isabella McHugh and Brooke Hamilton both from Castlederg, the course has offered a unique blend of hands-on learning and real-world insight. From food safety and quality assurance to product innovation and sustainability, students gain experience that reflects industry standards.
The students, pictured at the food technology facilities, are currently enrolled on Level 3 programmes, which are designed as alternative qualifications to A-levels. CAFRE equips learners with the practical skills, scientific knowledge and industry experience needed to succeed in Northern Ireland’s thriving agri-food sector.
Loughry Campus is recognised for excellence in food education, offering specialist training in food science, technology, nutrition and product development. Courses provide an important stepping stone for students who wish to progress into higher education, or apprenticeships within the food industry. Loughry Campus also boasts specialist laboratories, pilot-scale food processing facilities and expert teaching staff with strong links to the agri-food industry. These connections allow students to engage with employers, visit local food businesses and hear directly from professionals working across the sector.
“The practical side of the course has been a real highlight,” said Brooke. “We’re not just learning theory - we are working in purpose-built food production facilities and science laboratories, developing products and understanding how food businesses operate from farm to fork.”
This summer Brooke and Isabella completed work placements. Brooke successfully completed her placement with Grove Dairies, Castlederg. She gained experience in all aspects of the business and enjoyed time in both production and quality departments. Isabella really enjoyed gaining her experience in Foyle Meats. She worked mainly in the slaughter hall carrying out important Quality Control and Food Safety checks.
Isabella commented: “We completed a unit in Meat Technology in Year one as part of my Level 3 Extended Diploma Food course and it was great to implement that knowledge in the workplace.”
CAFRE’s Level 3 Food courses attract students from across Northern Ireland, reflecting the importance of the agri-food sector to rural communities. Many students from this programme progress onto Higher Education at CAFRE.
As the agri-food industry continues to grow and innovate, CAFRE Loughry Campus remains at the heart of training the next generation of skilled professionals. For these students, the journey has already begun - and the future looks full of opportunity.
Loughry Campus is inviting prospective students, parents and guardians to attend its upcoming Food Courses Open Evening on Tuesday 6 October 2026.
The event will provide visitors with an opportunity to discover the range of food-related courses available at CAFRE and gain first-hand insight into life as a student at Loughry Campus. Guided tours will depart at 4.30pm and 6.30pm, allowing guests to explore the campus's industry-leading facilities and meet the staff and students who make Loughry a unique place to study.
