Cloghastucan is a special place because of its earth science interest. The area provides excellent access to important exposures of limestone.

The rocks here date from the middle Cretaceous period of Earth history.
The limestone formed in a warm, shallow sea and is made up of millions of shells from microscopic animals.

The rocks are around 85 million years old and are part of the Ulster White Limestone that is exposed along much of the Antrim coast.

It is an important site as it is a type locality for one of the many beds that comprise the Ulster White Limestone.
