Appointment of Chairperson and four Members to the Livestock and Meat Commission (LMC)

Date published: 02 February 2023

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) is seeking to appoint a Chairperson and four Members to the Board of the Livestock and Meat Commission for Northern Ireland (LMC), with applications welcome from a wide range of backgrounds.

LMC is a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) sponsored by DAERA.  It was set up under the powers of the Livestock Marketing Commission Act (NI) 1967 for the benefit of the livestock (cattle and sheep) and livestock products industry in Northern Ireland. In particular it undertakes market research, provides up to date market intelligence information, supports the promotion of beef and lamb in domestic and export markets and works closely with DAERA to improve the competitiveness of the sector. The LMC also owns and operates the Farm Quality Assurance Scheme Northern Ireland for cattle and sheep within Northern Ireland.

Further information about the organisation, can be obtained from the LMC website at:
Livestock & Meat Commission | Northern Ireland Beef & Sheep Meat Industry (lmcni.com).

As a Board member of LMC I have gained insight into a new organisation which has a different structure and way of doing business than my main workplace. The other board members are from various industries and roles, some of which I have not typically worked with. The deviation from the norm has taught me new ways of operating and how different organisations and industries approach situations. Simply listening to others in meetings has provided me with cross-functional information on ways to approach problems and find new solutions. Those takeaways have not only helped me during my time on the board, but will continue to help me in the rest of my career.

It has been a rewarding and challenging role but one which I would encourage others to take on. As well as learning new skills it has been an opportunity to develop and enhance existing ones.

Joining a board helps you learn from the people around you, but also gives you the opportunity to share your knowledge and experiences with those same people! This sort of learning and exposure can be especially helpful if you’re searching for additional meaning in what you want to do and wish to align yourself with something that is meaningful, impactful and sustainable.

-Testimonial from LMC Board Member – Oonagh Chesney
