  • Commercial and Industrial waste arising survey for Northern Ireland

    Date published: 2 February 2026

DAERA have commissioned a survey of waste produced by businesses in Northern Ireland, commencing in February 2026.

    About the Survey

The survey, managed by the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) on our behalf, will record the waste produced by 1,500 commercial and industrial businesses in Northern Ireland during 2024, running from February to September 2026, and covering a wide range of industry sectors and company sizes.

If you are a business in Northern Ireland, you may have been invited to complete this survey, which requests information about the waste your business generates, and we would appreciate your engagement with the survey.

We have commissioned this survey to monitor national performance in recycling; provide robust data to measure against targets in the Climate Change Act (Northern Ireland) 2022; and identify recycling and waste treatment infrastructure requirements in Northern Ireland.

The survey will cover the following:

    • What types of waste were produced on your site in 2024.
    • How much of this waste was produced.
    • What happened to that waste (e.g. recycled, recovered, landfilled etc.).

    Delivery

DAERA and WRAP have commissioned consultants Anthesis and SLR to deliver this survey. Perceptive Insight, a leading market research company, will be arranging and completing the surveys.

Estimated time to complete the survey:

The time taken to complete the survey will depend upon the size and complexity of your operations, but we anticipate that most surveys will be completed within 15 – 45 minutes.

    Confidentiality

Any information you have provided will be treated as strictly confidential and will enable DAERA to accurately monitor key targets set out in the Climate Change Act (Northern Ireland) 2022.

    Survey Results

The anonymous aggregated survey data, along with grossed up data and subsequent interpretation, will be presented in a final report due February 2027. This will provide a picture of waste produced throughout Northern Ireland. This report will be published in the public domain.

    Contact Information

If you have received an email or been contacted via telephone, please do take part. If you have not yet received any communication but you would like to arrange an appointment to complete the survey, please phone Perceptive Insight on 0333 323 9696.
