    Topics:
    • Marine,
    • Marine planning,
    • Marine and coast,
    • Marine legislation

    Date published: 1 July 2026

This guidance supports the delivery of the Marine Protected Areas Strategy for the Northern Ireland Inshore Region by setting out how the Department intends to use byelaws under Part 3 of the Marine Act (Northern Ireland) 2013 to manage unregulated activities within Marine Conservation Zones and for the protection of Special Protection Areas and Special Areas of Conservation. It is intended to provide clarity to stakeholders and water users on how byelaws will be made for these sites.

The document should be read alongside the MPA Strategy, which sets out how the Department will protect, manage and restore Marine Protected Areas in Northern Ireland.
