CAFRE launches Equine Business Peer Learning Group to strengthen sector collaboration
Date published:
The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) has launched its Equine Business Peer Learning Group, a new initiative designed to support the development and sustainability of equine enterprises across Northern Ireland.
The inaugural session, held at CAFRE’s Loughry Campus, brought together a diverse group of equine professionals, including business owners, yard managers, instructors, breeders, innovators and a veterinarian - for a day of networking, shared learning, and planning. Facilitated by Laura Smith and Julie McSwiggan, the session featured guest speaker Ruth Moore, who shared insights from CAFRE’s successful Business Development Group models.
The programme, which will run monthly through a hybrid format of webinars and in-person workshops, aims to foster collaboration and peer support within the equine sector. Each session will focus on key themes such as business and marketing strategies, technology innovation, legal compliance and equine welfare. Participants will engage in facilitated discussions, site visits, and case studies, with opportunities to host sessions and to contribute their own business insights.
“This group is about building a more connected and resilient equine industry,” said Julie McSwiggan, Equine Technologist at CAFRE. “By learning from others’ experiences and challenges, we can strengthen our businesses and better serve the communities we work in.”
CAFRE’s initiative responds to the growing challenges faced by equine businesses, including rising operational costs, staffing shortages, and evolving customer expectations. By creating a structured yet flexible learning environment, the Peer Learning Group seeks to empower equine professionals to adapt, innovate, and thrive.
Participation is free and open to all equine sector stakeholders. Interested individuals can register via the CAFRE website.
From 1 February 2026, you will be unable to apply for a horse passport without an Equine Establishment Number (EEN). Registration is free. For more info and to register visit the DAERA website.
