  • DAERA Minister briefs Assembly on Mobuoy draft Remediation Strategy

    Date published: 9 June 2025

DAERA Minister Andrew Muir has made an oral statement in the Northern Ireland Assembly today following the sentencing of two company directors for their role in the illegal dumping of waste at the site in Derry.

Minister Muir announced his intention to launch a public consultation on the draft Remediation Strategy for the Mobuoy site in coming days.

Minister Muir said: “I welcome the conclusion of the Mobuoy case in court last week. I share the public concern and anger caused by the appalling situation at Mobuoy. That is why I will be moving to launch this consultation as quickly as possible to help everyone understand proposals to minimise risks to water quality and the environment.

“Safeguarding public health, ensuring safe drinking water, and reducing the environmental impact of the Mobuoy site is of paramount importance to me. My Department recognises that it has a duty, under the Water (NI) Order 1999, to promote the cleanliness of water in waterways and underground strata and will continue to take action to safeguard water quality and the environment at Mobuoy.

“There is no room for complacency, I take the discharge of my duty to the environment very seriously. To this end, my officials have produced a draft technical remediation strategy for the Mobuoy site.”

    The Minister’s full statement.
