  • Family morning for final year students at CAFRE Enniskillen Campus

    Date published: 24 February 2017

Family and friends of the Level 3 Year 2 Extended Diploma in Horse Management students were recently invited to Enniskillen Campus for an update on the progression of individual students. Enniskillen Campus management and staff strongly believe that a partnership between staff, students, parents/guardians, family and friends is most likely to achieve the best performance from the student.

Level 3 year 2 students show off their riding skills for their family morning at CAFRE Enniskillen Campus.

The Family morning commenced with a welcome from Head of Equine Branch, Seamus Mc Alinney and the Programme Manager, Sharon McLaren. Marita O’Loughlin, Year Manager, then complimented the students on their dedication to their studies and continued hard work within their modules. Danielle McLees (Belfast) and Alisha O’Hara (Lisnaskea) gave a presentation outling the range of modules that they are covering in the second year of their programme and discussed the level of work and responsibilities that are expected of them in their second year.

Visitors were then taken to the Campus’ Breeding Unit where students David Collins (Maghaberry) and Sarah McDowell (Dundrod) spoke of their involvement with the mares and how they were preparing for the breeding season within their Equine Stud Management module. They outlined how they were looking forward to the foaling season and how some of their classmates were hoping to see a mare foal for the first time. Visitors were also introduced to the young stock that students were currently breaking as part of their Introduction to the Principles of Young Horse Handling, Training and Backing module.

The grand finale was held in the outdoor arena where five students demonstrated their Show Jumping skills by jumping a course of fences on a range of horses from the Campus’ Equitation Unit. Adam Thompson (Ballyclare), Coral Logue (Newtownabbey), Megan Norton (Carrickfergus), Codi Millar (Londonderry) and Stephen Morgan (Newry) put in an excellent performance showing their commitment to this module and their hard work in preparing for the family morning. This was followed by a demonstration by racing students Elisha McAteer (Ballymoney) and Zoe Mc Mullan (Coleraine) jumping race horses over a hurdle, also in the outdoor arena.

The event finished up with a well needed cup of tea to warm everyone up and an opportunity for an update on each student on an individual basis with their Year Manager, Marita O’Loughlin, and their Programme Manager, Sharon McLaren. The family morning was thoroughly enjoyed by all present.
