  • Getting acquainted with the Arable Sector

    Date published: 2 December 2016

The majority of students completing higher education courses in agriculture at CAFRE’s Greenmount Campus are from a predominantly livestock background and all are given the opportunity to broaden their experience by selecting crops as the option for their Enterprise Studies.

(Left to right) Crops Enterprise Studies students Kathryn Clingen and Sarah Brown, Ballynahinch; Katie Boles, Lisbellaw; and Megan McKane, Ballymena, focused on crop rotation on their recent visit to Allan Chambers arable farm.

During a recent industry visit to the farm of Allan Chambers at Tullynaskeagh, Co Down, students investigated options for crop rotation including the use of stubble turnips as a winter fodder crop for sheep. Wide ranging discussions explored the impact of storage facilities on price and the machinery required. The students are now using knowledge gained on the visit to assist their preparations for making presentations to an industry panel and looking forward to future visit opportunities.
