The area is of special scientific interest because it is the only known locality for Cornish heath in Ireland.
It occurs on a south facing slope within a mixture of blanket bog and flushed wet heath vegetation. Cornish heath is listed as a protected wild plant under the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985.
