Milk utilisation statistics show the volume of raw milk purchased by firms operating in Northern Ireland. They also provide data on how that milk is used for the production of liquid milk and manufactured products (powder, cheese, butter, etc.), as well as the amount of raw milk exported.

Details

The information in the milk utilisation survey is used by the Northern Ireland government as evidence for assessing how raw milk is used in processing. The survey provides the information necessary to estimate the volume of dairy commodities such as liquid, cheese, powders etc. being manufactured within NI as well as the quantity of NI milk being exported to other countries for processing.  Results from the survey are forwarded to Defra for inclusion with GB results to form UK figures on the volume of milk products being produced.

The milk utilisation statistics were previously suspended from 2013 due to issues around data availability and confidentiality.  Following a review in 2023, it was decided to recommence the milk utilisation statistical release in a reduced format to address the confidentiality constraints.  The release in this new format has been published for the years from 2018 onwards.  There are no releases available that cover the period from July 2013 to December 2017.
