Date published:
DAERA has launched the NI Peatland Strategy to 2040.
The NI Peatland Strategy to 2040 sets the direction of travel over the next two decades and beyond. It provides a framework to guide the conservation and restoration of peatland habitats in NI.
Implementation of the strategy will also play an important role in the Department’s work in relation to biodiversity conservation, climate change and the wider Green Growth agenda.
Update 22 April 2026
DAERA has launched the first NI Peatland Strategy Delivery Plan which covers April 2026 to December 2027.
This initial Delivery Plan sets 14 short-term targets to help deliver peatland conservation, restoration and management until December 2027. It is intended that each subsequent Peatland Delivery Plan will align with the five-year cycles of NI Climate Action Plans.
The next Delivery Plan will cover the period January 2028- December 2032.
